About Katelyn Shorter
Katelyn Shorter is a kindergarten teacher, certified lifeguard, swim instructor, child development specialist, and licensed recreational therapist with nearly 20 years of experience teaching children both in and out of the water.
She has been certified as a lifeguard since the age of 15 and holds certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Aquatic Therapy. Over the years, Katelyn has taught thousands of children through private swim lessons, community pool programs, swim team preparation, aquatic therapy, and adaptive swim instruction.
Katelyn previously worked under Richard Sybesma, coach of the TCU Swim Team, and served as the Aquatic Director for the Ridglea Swimming Pool Association for three years. During that time, she developed swim lesson programming, water aerobics curriculum, and aquatic fitness opportunities for children and adults.
She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Oklahoma State University and her master’s degree in Infant Child Studies specializing in Child Development from the University of Central Oklahoma. Katelyn is certified through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification and has been a licensed Recreational Therapist since 2013.
Katelyn is also a certified aquatic therapist and has extensive experience working with children of all abilities, including children with Autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, sensory challenges, anxiety surrounding water, and other special needs. She has even coached amputees training for triathlons while helping build confidence and independence in the water.
Her teaching philosophy is centered around patience, encouragement, safety, and helping every child feel successful at their own pace. Lessons are designed to build confidence while making swimming fun and engaging for every swimmer.
Katelyn attended Southwest Christian School before continuing her education at Oklahoma State University. During her college years, she returned home each summer to teach swimming lessons across Fort Worth, Texas — something that continued to grow into her lifelong passion for water safety and child development.
A Note From Katelyn
“I cannot wait to teach your child to swim! Whether your child is nervous around the water or already loves to swim, my goal is to help them feel safe, confident, and successful in the water. I use fun songs, silly faces, encouragement, and patience to help every swimmer feel comfortable while learning important lifelong water safety skills. I can’t wait for another exciting swim season — see you in the water!”
